INTERVIEW WITH STACY BARROW

Hairdresser for the New Age

Michael Shawn Corby Hair Stylist 2009 Ed Wise Alterna ShowWe first met Stacy Barrow at the Marv Smith, Hair Lounge show in Bellevue WA last year where the gang from the legendary Northwest hair team Visions reunited. Stacy was one of the support team for the show and did herself proud with the quality of her work.

Stacy is the reason Capelli d'Oro exists. Capelli is all about the connections between the giants who brought us here and the young talents that will provide this century's leadership.

She is an up and coming hairdresser that is sure to be a future leader of the business. She is personable, bright, ambitious and good at her art. She is always learning and is being mentored by the best: Marv Smith and crew from Lounge Hair in Federal Way Seattle and with connections to Vivian McKinder, Michael Hall and some of the best photographers in Seattle.

Michael Shawn Corby Hair Stylist 2009 Ed Wise Alterna ShowRecently, Stacy did the hair for an amazing article about Adicora Swimwear in Seattle's DList Magazine: an activity that brought her to the attention of numerous creative editors around town.

Capelli d'Oro had the opportunity to talk to Stacy about her work and to get to know her a bit as an enthusiastic practitioner of the hair arts.

Capelli d'Oro: What was the experience of traveling to New York to work with Vivian McKinder?

Stacy Barrow: It was definitely amazing and a highlight of my career. It was what is called a "Five and Five": five days and five stylists workshop with Vivian in New York. We were cutting, coloring, doing updos and working one-on-one with her.

Capelli d'Oro: How did something that awsome that come about for you?

Stacy Barrow: The stylists I work with at Hair Lounge know Vivian McKinder personally and got me involved in the event. In talking with her, Vivian said she wanted to conduct a small workshop at her home in her studio with a few stylists. I was invited along with two stylists I knew.

Capelli d'Oro: How did you begin working with Marv Smith and the guys at Hair Lounge?

Stacy Barrow: That's a great story, actually. I was diagnosed with a serious medical condition at the age of 3 and I had a wig made for me by a local wig shop that made me look like a seventies go go dancer. My mom worked close by to the salon and she took me to Marv, who made me a totally cool wig that he kept up for me every six weeks. In my last year of high school I knew I was going to be a hairdresser.

I became a receptionist and started working on extensions and other projects at the salon. I started at the Hair Lounge as a hairdresser about six years ago.

Capelli d'Oro: That's the best hair story I have heard in a long time. With that start, you had best be motivated to succeed. What current project are you working on?

Stacy Barrow: One of the girls I went to New York with and I are working on our own photoshoot to enter into the NAHA awards. Vivian said she would be our sponsor to enter our work with Intercoiffure. I've got another photoshoot for DList Magazine lined up.

Capelli d'Oro: We would love to follow your progress in that endeavor. Let us know if that would work for you. What is your online exposure?

Stacy Barrow: I am on Facebook and am currently organizing all my hair work from editorial work to everyday salon work for my Facebook and to put on my new and upcoming website. Facebook is the new email and web presence for my generation. I have so many unedited pictures from photographers; I have my biography, and all the other things to make a personal website.

Capelli d'Oro: What do you do for down time or to relax?.

Stacy Barrow: I usually like to schedule off work and go see something I have never seen before. Either go just around the corner or to an exotic location. I have a trip to Mexico coming up and another one in Maui. I like to have the downtime mesh with projects, if I can, otherwise I am just shopping. Right now, I plan on doing some yard work.

Capelli d'Oro: When you are being bad with food, what is your favorite guilty pleasure?

Stacy Barrow: I love the healthy first. I love fresh mangoes. I really watch what I eat. I have been working out with a personal trainer the past few months. I want to feel good about myself and get in shape for all the traveling I am going to be doing.
